We are delighted to announce that we are open.
As everyone works towards the new normal within the Government and health guidelines, your experience with us may be a little different. We are working to a changing set of rules based on instruction from the authorities, so please, before you visit us, take a quick look at the measures that will be in place at our Southwick pub with beer garden.
The wearing of a mask whilst inside our venue is now mandatory and non-negotiable, unless you are exempt from wearing one. This is to protect you, our customers and our staff. Mask should be worn on arrival and whenever you are not sitting at your table (e.g. walking to the washrooms / smoking area etc)
Booking is available for inside tables only. Our Balcony & Terrace tables are available on first-come-first-served basis on arrival. All tables are subject to a 2 hour limit and customers are asked to remain at their tables.
We will require contact details (name and mobile number) from one person within the group which will be taken on arrival or you may use scan the QR code if you are using the current NHS Test & Trace system.
What to expect when you arrive.
We will need to operate a one-at-a-time system for use of our loos.
All orders will be taken by staff at your table. We are unable to serve at the bar due to Social Distancing guidelines.
We need to keep the music down. Unfortunately.
The wearing of masks inside our venue is mandatory whenever you are now sitting to eat or drink. This means that when you arrive, you should wear a mask until you are seated at your table. You should also wear a mask whenever you move around the venue (for example, to visit the washrooms or go outside to the smoking area).
Those who have a recognised exemption do not need to wear a mask.
The wearing of masks if for the protection of others. Our other customers and our staff. The safety and wellbeing of our customers and staff is at the forefront of everything that we do.
We are open:
Thursday - Saturday
Midday to 10pm (Kitchen: Thursday 12-2.30pm & 6pm-8.30pm / Friday & Saturday 12-8.30pm).
Midday - 8pm (Kitchen: Sunday Roasts from Midday until 6pm)
Please note that we must vacate the premises of customers in order to lock our doors at 10pm as instructed by The Government.
Inside tables are available to book. Outside tables are offered on a first-come-first-served basis and will be allocated according to your group size. Please don't expect two of you to sit at a table with eight seats as we need to work within the limits that social distancing places on our operating capacity. If you have booked an inside table and wish to dine outside, we will do our best to accommodate this - but this is strictly subject to availability and the appropriate tables (see above) being available). Of course, once you have moved outside, inside tables may become fully booked... so changing your mind may not be possible.
All tables are subject to a 2 hour limit. This is to allow for regular cleaning to table place and enable as many of our customers as possible to enjoy our unique venue.
We ask all guest at The New Port Arms not to 'table hop' and remain at the table you are allocated to avoid the spread of COVID-19.
In line with Government guidelines and due to the size of our tables, our booking policy is for up to 6 people from different households. If your household is more than six people or you are all members of a legally recognised bubble, you may still visit - but we would ask that you contact us beforehand to confirm this is the case. This covers the venue should we be inspected.
Tables will be allocated on arrival (unless you have booked an inside table) according to the size of the group (to allow for social distancing), and whether you will be dining with us (some tables are low level and more suited to drinking than dining).
Please stay at the table you have been allocated. We need to manage the sanitation of tables and social distancing at the venue and prevent the spread of COVID-19. All tables are subject to a two hour limit to allow us to follow our cleaning procedures and allow as many people as possible to enjoy our venue. Please bear this in mind.
Children and dogs are, as always, very welcome, but we do ask that they are kept on a lead at all times. Dogs that is. Please keep your children within your designated seating area and away from the water's edge. For safety reasons, we cannot allow 'crabbing' or fishing nets over the side of our terrace.
As it has been widely reported, the terms upon which we can open also require us to record contact details from one person per group. If you have booked online, then we will already have your details. All other customers will be required to supply a name and mobile number of one of your group members. This information is kept for 21 days before being permanently erased.
Alternatively, you can scan the QR code we must legally display if you have the NHS Test & Trace app downloaded on your device.
The capture of track and trace information is non-negotiable. If you refuse to leave a contact name and number or scan the QR code, you will not be permitted to enter the terrace or bar premises.
On arrival, you will be greeted at our terrace entrance by our staff who will ensure we have the required contact details or that you have scanned the QR code. This ensures that we are compliant with the Government test and trace requirements. If you have parked in the car park, then please ask for a parking ticket to display in your vehicle.
Weather permitting, we will offer you a table, suitable to your group size and whether you are dining. Our terrace or balcony tables are offered on a first-come-first-served basis. We are unable to take bookings for outside tables. All tables are offered for a maximum of two hours from arrival.
Should you need to pop to the loo, you will need to pop on your mask. We are operating a one-in-one-out system. Please be patient with us and leave enough time so you are not caught short. Please use our washrooms for the necessities and use the lock on the main toilet entry door. No reapplying a full face of makeup or creating a brand new hairdo. Oh, and as if you need reminding, please wash your hands!
An organised washroom system helps us to maintain social distancing and carry out our strict hygiene regime.
Our staff will take your order from you at your table. To protect our staff and other customers, please do not come to the bar to order or pay your bill - we will be with you as soon as we can.
All venues have been instructed to keep background music to a level that does not require staff or customers to ‘raise their voice above normal level to be heard’. So, for now, we will not be able to turn up your favourite tune when it comes on. Even if it is Dexy’s Midnight Runners. Sorry.
We will not be holding live music events for the foreseeable future.
Please bear with us at this strange time. We are all learning. To use the phrase that is constantly bandied about, these are ‘unprecedented times’. Our priority is the safety of all of our customers and staff and we need to do things by the book. Your support while we get used to our new way of working is really appreciated. It will help us to stay open, get back to something resembling normality, and welcome everyone to our lovely pub. If you have any questions at all, then please get in touch.
Of course, as we all know, guidelines are constantly being reviewed and changed and we must adapt and change as we are instructed to.
We will update this page as and when this information is available.
Please help us by adhering to these rules and supporting our staff in carrying out their duties under these conditions. If you don’t follow these rules or give our staff a hard time, we will need to ask you to leave. Please don’t put us in that awkward position.
Inside tables are available to book for diners. If you arrive and we have an outside table available, we will, of course, move you out into the sunshine.
If you would like to book a table for today, then please call us on 01273 597422.
